BEÑAT OLABERRIA

"I am fascinated with the process of making and the conflict that emerges between my
impulsive being and the strong controlling sense in my own personal visual logic."
Originally from Spain, Beñat Olaberria is a London based artist graduated from City and Guilds from London Art School with an MA in Fine Art. With a non impressionistic, non narrative and non reductive approach to making, Beñat ́s practice explores the unknown territories of his mind. Like in an unplanned walk, he is interested in constructing abstract
pieces as a reaction to his first nervous, unplanned and impulsive mark-making until the desired balance is achieved though his visual logic and personal language.
Beñat has taken part in numerous group exhibitions around the UK and his work can be
found in private collections across Europe, Canada and USA. He has recently had solo shows in Barcelona, Switzerland and London.
Engaged in reconnecting with my past, I am using a language that rescues previously abandoned organic and gestural black mark-making. Nervous pencil lines, thick acrylic paint, dirt and charcoal enable me to offer traces of intimate moments of time and space whilst still refuse representation by escaping visual description and verbal fixation.
I am fascinated with the process of making and the conflict that emerges between my impulsive being and the strong controlling sense in my own personal visual logic. I draw from the vast and unknown space of my internal landscape, responding to the colourless and liminal non-places of my mind. I construct ambiguous pieces, as a recording of a process marked by the absence of a definable meaning, which allow me to get lost in these undefined territories.
